I was struggling doing things related to the map as the UI design for my webpage was different from my friends, what I have done was do that on the CS lab computer instead of my personal laptop. In the next few days, I may try to figure out why this is happening to my laptop.
The AllMaps Editor really changed my impression about spatial digital humanity progress. Earlier, I believed that digital humanity only involves the visualization of data. In contrast, with the AllMaps Editor, we got a way to compare the visualized data chronologically. For example, in the graph above, we can somehow see the differences of the past Minneapolis city compared with the modern geographic map. We can get several formats of rectified maps: all maps viewer exportation, georeference annotation, and xyz map tiles.
Possibilities and about the future.
The rectified maps have many possibilities, some may even not be related to humanities. For example, the overlaying map may show the changes of the river’s location, which reflects some geographic changes. For now, we got two 2D maps with different time periods overlaying with each other. In the future, we may be able to overlay 3D maps in order to compare maps from now and in the future. With the more detailed 3D maps, we may get more insight from the changes in the years.
Problems
As the rectified maps can be convenient for chronological comparison, with an increasing amount of details appearing on the map, there may be some potential problems. As our mapping technology is highly accurate, it is very likely that we can display every single individual building on the map, which can potentially cause privacy issues. In addition, the rectified maps cannot be applied to places with large changes. Some extreme events, like a nuclear leak, will lead to serious landscape changes. This may make the rectified maps ineffective as the changes happening were too large.
As the rectified maps may cause some privacy issues, it shouldn’t be applied to some research questions that are too personal. Specifically, changes in president Trump’s garden in the last few years.
