WOW! It’s so interesting that those two maps happened to align so nicely. Are they from the same mapmaker or a similar time period? I also loved the interactive map! Do you have any plans on expanding this at all? It’d be really cool to see a larger “Frankenmap” made out of old records.
As someone who also did a mapping project, I have a lot of respect for all the time and energy it must have taken you to fit those map layers back together. I can also specifically relate to the frustration of anything to do with large water features/coastlines not aligning. It is super cool to be able to see a familiar area (generally speaking, I am not familiar with Wales) through a new lens!
Great project Mal! I love the idea of fitting separated map sheets back together, and the moment you described when two sheets finally lined up sounds really satisfying. It’s cool that the sheets you’d already placed made the next ones easier to georeference, so the map kind of built on itself as you went.
I appreciate your dedication in fitting both of these maps together so well. Having had my own struggles with georectifying one map for my project, I must imagine this took some effort. Do you know how many georeference points you used in Allmaps for each map? I must also commend you on the significance of this work: it is quite interesting to see how much (or rather, how little) the roads and other structures have changed since the production of the older maps. I think your purpose of stitching these separated maps together again is a compelling one, and it the process of sharing it online allows for more people to understand how the physical maps likely would have been used.
