Midterm Project

Here is my Midterm Project. I georeferenced historic military installations via Allmaps.

  1. I really like the detail and attention you put into the accuracy of the maps and how large you went with the area you georeferenced. How do you think that you can apply these skills in the future, and do you think you’ll use them often in your future career? Overall, I think that your presentation looks really good and it’s super impressive!

  2. Hi Myles, this is a great project! I did something similar, so I appreciated hearing and reading about a different perspective on a similar collection of maps and seeing how they all fit together. I also thought your use of the embedded AllMaps viewer was really convenient and easy to use. I opted for ArcGIS, so it’s cool to see a different approach.

  3. Myles, this was a fun one to explore. Using river forks and highway junctions as control points was a smart call, and it gave the map solid anchors. I also appreciated that you admitted the map didn’t match modern geography after an hour and a half of careful work. I believe that kind of honesty makes the project stronger. One idea: maybe add a screenshot of the worst misalignment so your readers can see what georeferencing can’t fix.

  4. Hi Myles, fantastic project! Having worked on a similar map collection using ArcGIS, it’s really neat to see your approach here. I definitely relate to the trial-and-error of placing control points along rivers and highways; even after an hour of tweaking, perfect alignment can be so tricky! The embedded AllMaps viewer works great on your site and makes exploring the Fifth Service Command map super seamless.

  5. Your project was pretty cool, particularly the way you used rivers and highways in order to align the historical map with present geography. It’s incredible that despite working as much as you did, the maps still did not get to perfectly overlap. I like the interactive nature of the map, letting me to explore it independently. Would you say that the misalignment of the maps was due to the errors in the original map or changes in the geography?
