For this lab, I made a Carleton field goal post in Fusion 360 because football has been a meaningful part of my time at Carleton.
The process started with creating the basic shape of the goal post using sketches and then extruding them to make the model 3D. I had to make sure the uprights, crossbar, and middle post were lined up correctly. After I had the main shape finished, I created a new sketch on the middle post and used the text tool to add “CARLETON” vertically down the front. That part took some trial and error because I had to adjust the size and spacing so the text would fit.
One of the harder parts was changing the colors. I had trouble figuring out how to drag different appearances onto the model, and I could not figure out how to make the text a different color from the rest of the goal post. Because of that, one compromise I made was leaving the text the same color. My friend Evan eventually showed me how to use the Appearance tool, which made changing the goal post to yellow much easier. I definitely wish I had figured that tool out sooner, and that would be my main tip for someone else using Fusion for the first time. Overall, the process helped me get more comfortable with sketches, extrusions, text, colors, and working with a 3D model.

I think the goalpost looks cool! I think your use of the text adds a really cool touch. I also think it’s cool that Evan was able to help out with the appearances. I think that aligning everything is one of the biggest challenges I had on Fusion 360 as well. One main question I have is did you combine multiple sketches together or was it just one sketch and you extruded the whole thing?
I really like how the goalpost turned out! The details you added make it look a lot more realistic and connected to Carleton. I also like how you explained the process of getting everything lined up in Fusion 360. I had some trouble with that too, especially the extruding. Did you have any parts that were especially difficult to model?
This goal post is pretty sweet. The best part of it is that it says Carleton and not Olaf!!! Let’s hope that Matty G hits some field goals through the uprights on Saturday. I thought the coloring of this was nice, I wasn’t sure how to add that to mine so i’ll have to go to Evan to help me out next time.
Thanks Jack! I would never consider putting Olaf on this field goal post as it is the CARLETON! field goal post that is important to me. Go Kinghts! and Pound the Oles!
