Process of making the graph
The process of making the map is convenient overall, as the website provides clear and structured editing tools for users. ArcGIS online was a powerful tool for map making. It offers various basemap and well formatted layers edition tools, which enhances the overall flexibility of the tool. I first import the buildings’ position and time visited, and change the color of the point based on the function of the building. This helps distinguish the functions of the building. To facilitate understanding, I added labels of function for each building. Finally, I drawed the polygon feature and colored it according to functions.
Potential of web mapping for DH work
The web mapping website provides users with a high flexibility edition, which provides users with chances to create maps for all purposes. Specifically, users can easily create visualized maps with labels and explanations, which facilitates understanding. For example, for some population check programs, a visualized heat map can provide a clear overview of population density in a specific area.
I really liked how you color coded your buildings based on function; I did that as well! I agree, digital map making is very useful for DH projects and all purposes overall. I like how you mentioned heat maps specifically—I didn’t think about that! There are definitely a lot of good uses for that, such as population, which you mention, but also weather and movement. Great post!
Hi Peter! I really like the design style of your map, especially how you used different colors to outline the buildings. It makes the map visually appealing and helps distinguish the functions of different buildings. I also like how you added labels to make the information easier to understand. I think this is a great example of how web mapping can make historical and spatial data more accessible.
