Process of creating my own website

Here is a link to my website: https://joeychan.sites.carleton.edu/about-me/.

Setting up

Setting up my own WordPress website was an interesting experience, but it was not always as easy as I expected. At first, I had to spend some time understanding how different blocks and design tools worked together. I also experienced a bug where the website stopped responding properly, and I was not sure whether I had done something wrong. After trying a few things, I duplicated the browser tab and reloaded the website, which surprisingly solved the problem. When I started playing around with my website, I used CSS to change the background color of my paragraph, which looked nice.

Future plans and imaginging my own website

I think I could use this website as a place to collect and present my work, including blog posts, Digital Humanities projects, research, and other things that I create. I could also continue developing the website as I learn more about web design and Digital Humanities. One major benefit of hosting my own website is having more control over both my content and how it’s presented. Social media platforms usually don’t offer users much space for interaction, and algorithms influence what content people actually see. I have much more freedom to organize my work and decide how it should look with my own website. At the same time, having this control also requires more thoughts on posting content. Therefore, I am responsible for anything posted on my own website.

  1. Hi Joey, I also encountered similar situations. My webpage looks fine in the editor, but the layout changes after I publish it. I struggled and tried several things to fix it but I failed. Eventually, I changed my theme and it worked. I am not sure about what to do with my website, and your thoughts really give me some insight to it, thanks.

  2. I like your point about having more control over your own website compared to social media platforms. I also had some trouble getting used to the different WordPress blocks and tools at first. I think it’s interesting that you used CSS to customize the background, since it shows how even small changes can make a website feel more personal
