Mapping in ArcGIS

My experience fiddling with ArcGIS.

(I tried to embed this a couple times, but I just don’t think WordPress likes me today. Below was my attempt to embed my app using an iframe. It opens fine on web once logged in.) Using ArcGIS feels a lot like a regular vector software. I liked the parallel lines and right angle training wheels on the polygon tools a lot– its polygon tool is in the running for my favorite in any app. (To be fair, my standards are Google Draw, so the bar is buried in the ground) I decided to pick five different kinds of buildings: a place where I sleep, a place where my friends are, one for coffee and studying, one for extracurriculars, and one for academics. Conveniently, this term, all of my classes are in the CMC, so that made my choices pretty easy to make. I don’t know if the transparency and colors make the trends easiest to see, but my goal was more to fiddle with the settings than to create a show-stopping result. I really enjoyed using this software and I can see how it would be helpful for making maps with legible interfaces. Its potential is truly boundless in any field involving geography, like mapping changes decade-to-decade in a quickly eroding landscape for a geologist or immortalizing a decaying map for a historian.

  1. I also had issues with embedding my map. I eventually got it figured out, however, so I hope this will be of use to you: instead of embedding it as an iFrame, you want to go to the map overview, click the “Create app” drop down menu to the right of the screen, and then “Instant Apps”. Once that tab opens, the process is more straightforward. It took me forever to find that menu, so hopefully this is helpful.
Your map turned out great. Is there a reason you chose a grayscale basemap?

  2. I agree, I think that playing around with the settings is more important than a “show stopper”. I had a lot of fun when it came to playing around with the settings inside of ArcGIS. Also, I agree that embedding the map is an absolute pain but I think it’s just a challenge that comes with the programs that we use.
