Looking back on Northfield MN

Project Members: Michael Dipeolu

Project pitch + objective

The overall goal of this project is to map out Northfield MN and compare its current geography to versions of it from the past. After having visuals from all maps and other imagery to represent a before and after type of relationship, I think adding a graphical visual that conveys population over time would also help put into perspective how the town has grown over time.

Sources

To do this, I plan on using public references to gather photos across the city at notable landmarks, as well as older maps of the city to reference against the new versions I create using the All-maps editor.
I plan on collecting population information to the best of my ability, likely through a census from every couple years, and will be making use of Flourish in order to properly display the information I’ve gathered.

I’ve taken inspiration from these two projects:
The Carleton Arboretum Through the Years
Carletonian Through Time

Timeline

Week 8: Mostly collecting data and preparing them for editing
Week 9: Using Software/Websites to edit data and graph it within site
Week 10: Update small details, prepare presentation

Reflection

Michael: I’m very curious to see the differences in how Northfield looked, especially since i know many places like around Carleton have had buildings remodeled and repurposed rather than destroyed and completely removed. I also think it would be nice to explore more of the city, considering how much time I’ve spent here without being able to see much of it.
