Lab Post 2: The Importance of web Fundamentals

In the modern age, I believe that it is of the utmost importance that students understand the fundamentals of web language and development as well as the history of the internet. Now, I don’t think that means that everyone has to master a coding language or be able to build a website from scratch at any given moment. However, they do need to understand how the internet and websites work and what the different elements do. Without the understanding of how something works, you limit what you can do as a person, whether it’s for a job or simply just you want to make something. By limiting what you can do, we are closing people off from potentially amazing creations and projects. I believe that teaching internet history is also very important for education today. When it comes to something we use every single day, knowing how it came to be and who got it there. We must learn from the past in order to have a better future; we also must apply that to the history of the Internet. By having this education be readily available to all students, we are better equipping people to handle day-to-day life and make things that are truly special.

My only coding experience in the past was a single class in high school I took where I learned the basics of JavaScript. I found it incredibly fun and enjoyable while at the same time being super frustrating and difficult. During this class, I had to make simple projects and run small simulations, and like I said, it was focused on the basics. I found creating something digital to be very cool and a fun outlet.

<!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>My Own Website</title> <style> body { background-color: white; font-family: Arial; } h1 { color: blue; text-align: center; } h2 { color:blue; text-align: center; } p { color: black; font-size: 16px; } </style> </head> <body> <h1>My Website</h1> <p>This is my own creative space to do what I want.</p> <h2>About Me</h2> <p>I can use this to create and show off what I've learned and be creative</p> <h2>My Projects</h2> <p>Here I can showcase my work.</p> </body> </html>.

I had a lot of fun creating this code. Although HTML was a completely new language to me, I found that my past experience with a computer science class was helpful in creating it. It taught me about the process needed to learn a coding language, and the patience I learned there was definitely useful in learning about HTML.

  1. Your idea about the fact that web development learning provides many new possibilities and creative ideas is something I agree with. The history of the Internet is another thing you touched upon in your article, which I believe also reveals how important the process of collaboration is for making discoveries. It is convenient that you have experience with working with JavaScript, as it makes learning a new language like HTML more approachable.

  2. I totally agree with you here! I definitely think that everyone who uses the web should have a basic understanding of how things work. If you don’t know at least a little about the hows and whys, you won’t be able to use the tool effectively!
