I had a lot of fun making my own website on WordPress where I can create my own content to share with the world. I found the installation process fairly straightforward, and I was able to quickly make my about page after much practice posting on here. I decided to format my website like a simple blog; I’ve never had a website before, so that seemed like a good starting point. The most challenging part, for me, was figuring out the design. At one point, I had an issue with the header covering my page’s content, so I edited the CSS code so that the header would be relative.
site.header {
position: relative
}
This worked at first, but I ended up switching the theme later on. I actually toyed with a few different themes before eventually settling on one I liked, but I wasn’t sold on the color scene and heading design. I used my DevTools skills to make a pink background for the header, make the text light pink, and change the style of the text to italic. I looked up the different color codes for CSS, and I really enjoyed experimenting with different background and font colors throughout this process.
I hope to use this platform to explore what I learn in my Digital Humanities class, and practice using CSS code. For instance, maybe I’ll write blog posts about my learning process to share my journey with the world. I preferred hosting my own website to using a social media platform or a service, as I found hosting my own to be more customizable. Particularly, being able to edit the CSS code and design was something I found very valuable when making the site my own. Additionally, I was able to manage spam comments and specific layout aspects of my site, which I wouldn’t have been able to do as thoroughly if I had just signed up for a service. However, I will say it was a lot more difficult to set up my own site in comparison to a social media, as I had to manage everything myself rather than having the platform manage it for me. Overall, though, I am excited to get started with my new site, and put what I’ve been learning in Digital Humanities into play!

Lily, I agree that it was nice to be able to use css code to customize the webpage. It was exciting seeing the ways that small changes in code could affect the display dramatically. I do wonder what the learning curve will be like in terms of managing the website. It was difficult at the begging for me as well, but my hope is that as time goes on, we will become more familiar with the systems, in turn reducing the amount of time we need to devote to direct management.
