Blog Post 4: Text Visualization with The Great Gatsby

using voyant tools

I found my experience working with Voyant Tools to be smooth and easy for me as the user. I used the text file from The Great Gatsby to create a visualization with. All it took was uploading a simple text file, and I was able to analyze patterns with ease. It allowed for customization of which visualizations were created and customization of stop words and other parameters. I think that there is a lot of room to accurately create visualizations; however, I do think that the creativity of the user is mildly limited by the site, and we were not able to fully create the visualizations ourselves.

WOrking with gemini

I found that working with Google’s Gemini was very easy and seamless as well, and allowed for visualizations to be created very quickly. I utilized the same text from The Great Gatsby to create this visualization. Gemini quickly provided me with code to build a visualization through an outside program, which I thought required a bit more work than Voyant. However, I think that by changing the prompts that you give to create the visualization, you have more creativity when using the AI model. It allows you to have more say in what the finished product looks like.

issues with AI

I think that in this age where AI is developing and changing rapidly, using AI to analyze texts is an incredibly good use of it. However, I think that there are certain areas in which we have to be careful. For example, it completely removes the user from the process itself. By putting all of the analysis in the hands of an artificial intelligence, you are not doing anything to learn how to do the heavy lifting yourself. This can be risky because by not knowing the mechanics of text analysis, the user might not be able to identify potential mistakes or biases that could happen. This would lead to flawed analysis and inaccuracies, which could harm the user and their intention when it comes to the analysis. Overall, I think that AI is useful to analyze texts, but just like all AI use, you should know how to do yourself what you ask AI to do for you.
