I think the overall process was pretty easy, especially since I only used some simple tools such as Sketch and Extrude. Once I understood how these basic tools worked, creating the actual model was not too difficult. The harder part was deciding what I wanted to make before I started modeling. I spent almost an hour just thinking about what object I wanted to create. Eventually, I decided to model an iPad because it was the first electronic device I had when I was young. It helped me embrace technology at a very young age, so I thought it would be interesting to recreate something that has a personal connection to me.
Since I am still new to Fusion 360, I kept my model relatively simple. I focused on the main features that make an iPad recognizable. I think this was a reasonable compromise because my goal was more about learning how 3D modeling works than making a perfect copy of an iPad.
At the same time, this project made me think about how 3D modeling can be useful in the humanities because objects can carry memories and stories. For me, modeling an iPad reminded me of my first experiences with technology and how that object influenced me when I was younger. In a similar way, historians could create models of historical objects, buildings, monuments, or places that no longer exist or are difficult to visit. This could also make history more interactive for students and the public. People could even see a reconstruction of what it might originally have looked like. Museums could also use these models to make fragile or inaccessible objects easier for visitors to explore. In this sense, 3D modeling is not only about making objects; it can also help us think about how objects and spaces connect people to the past.
My biggest tip for other Fusion 360 beginners is to think before you start modeling. I spent almost an hour thinking about my project before I really started, and I felt like it was worth it. Having a clear picture of what you want to create makes tools like Sketch and Extrude much easier to use because you already know what basic shapes you need. For beginners, I think starting with a simple idea and building it piece by piece is much easier than trying to figure everything out while modeling. Overall, I am really glad to have this opportunity.
The iPad looks great! My experience was fairly similar to yours and I agree with you that once you figure out the basic tools it got much more efficient. I wish I would’ve seen your advice sooner because I think I rushed into my project and it only further delayed me finishing it up. I also really like your idea of museums using modeling to protect valuable items and make them more accessible.
