Mapping my visited places at Carleton

For this weeks lab, I mapped the Carleton College campus with my personal 5 most visited places. I live in Goodhue so of course I’d spend lots of time there, and being close to the Recreation center helps allows me to go there a couple times a week. but I’m also a manager for the Varsity Men’s Basketball team and play club volleyball so i visit Cowling and West gym very often. And lastly, I have Japanese class in LDC everyday and go to CMC outside of class time enough to make it my5th most frequented spot on campus.

I decided to use a map that was similar to what people would be familiar with such as google maps, but with a bit less clutter and something easier on the eyes. Additionally I tried to make sure the color of the highlighted buildings wasn’t too drastically different from the base-map so everything would look natural.

I think web mapping has significant potential for digital humanities because through these maps, not only can people record locations, but the personal significance of certain areas has a chance to be documented. Being able to see information visually is also a huge advantage in trying to convey information compared to simple writing, and has possible professional use cases.
