Creativity through Digital Humanities

“Playful, imaginative, participatory work is not the enemy of education, but its exuberant and vital engine”

Burdick, Anne, et al. Digital_Humanities. MIT Press, 2012. MIT Press Direct, https://doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/9248.001.0001

This passage grabbed my attention because as I’ve learned more about the digital humanities I’ve come to realize that it’s a creative expansion of methods that’ve already been in use since the printing press. 25 years ago they never could have envisioned where technology and innovation would lead us in regards to the Humanities, yet all of the foundations of writing and art remain the same. They could not have predicted the effect that AI would have on art, media, and learning in general. So I think that overall as technology changes and we have to adapt we must embrace the imaginative and playful nature that only expands education.

As a brand new freshman exploring a college classroom for the first time I’m reminded that although the content and the methods are changing, the foundation of learning and exploration rooted deep inside we’ll stay the same. As I further explore the humanities I’m exciting to learn how digital modeling and mapping will help me as I explore a prospective career in a legal field. I think that the ability to present data sets through different lenses will allow for fresh perspectives and give a better glance into the “complete picture”.

As I look forward in this class, I’m incredibly excited to work more with 3D modeling as well as different ways to view and map data sets. As this is my first year in college and I’m not fully sure what I want to pursue however I know that becoming familiar with 3D modeling programs such as Fusion360 will help me in any career. For so long our perspective of history and creation has been limited to drawings and pictures and with 3D modeling technology it allows immersion into history and that’s incredibly interesting to me. Data sets are also seen in such a linear way and I believe that by using new mapping techniques and even AI we could see data in a new way. This new way could open doors to new businesses or ways to optimize how we do things now and I think that it’s a way we progress into the future. Overall, I’m excited to utilize quantitative and design tools to reveal new perspectives and ideas.
