For my midterm project, I used data from the Tate art collection to create two interactive Flourish visualizations exploring gender representation across artists’ birth decades and the ten most common countries where artists were born.

Stefan, I thought your project was interesting because it uses data visualization to highlight patterns in the representation of artists in major art collections. I especially liked how you broke down the data by gender and country of birth, as it provides a better perspective on how the Tate collection has evolved over time.
Stefan, I really enjoyed your project and I thought it was interesting to see how the growth of women artists in Tate modern. Furthermore, I am not surprised to see UK and USA as the top 2 countries, but it was interesting to see how almost all of the top 10 is European countries. Great work!
I liked how you used two different visualizations to look at representation from both gender and geographic perspectives. Your point that the dataset can reveal patterns without necessarily explaining why those patterns exist was especially important. I also thought it was good that you acknowledged limitations like country of birth not always matching nationality and birth decade not showing when an artist entered the collection. That makes the project feel more careful and avoids over interpreting the data.
Well done with the graphs! I think your processing of the data and later analysis of the differences between gender and representation to be quite convincing. Like Jake said, I also appreciate your acknowledgement of the lack of clear explanation for the patterns; there may simply be correlations without any evident causations as well. I am curious about your sources and choice of presentation: were some of the country names not in English in the original dataset? I like the theme you chose for your page, the linear style lends itself to the design of the graphs; I do wonder if there is a way to simplify the directory on the left-hand side of the screen.
